Ladies Of Lee Visit Washington, D.C.

Lee University’s all-female choir Ladies of Lee visited Washington D.C. on its spring tour. The group performed at various churches and schools and met United States Senators Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker.

“It was a significant moment for the choir to meet individuals face-to-face who serve in high ranking offices of our nation’s government,” said Dr. Jonathan Rodgers, director of Ladies of Lee and assistant professor of music.

“They were so gracious to give up time out of their busy schedule ‘on the hill’ to interact with our students and answer their questions.”

The tour began in Maryville, Tn., at William Blount High School. From there, the group traveled to Patrick Henry High School in Roanoke, Va,; Colgan High School and Mountaintop Church in Manassas, Va.; Centerpointe Church in Fairfax, Va.; and Chincoteague Church of God in Chincoteague Island, Va.

Dr. Rodgers said the purpose of the tour was to spread the word of God in song and share the Lee story.

In addition to meeting Senators Alexander and Corker in D.C., the choir visited historical locations and museums along the National Mall, attended the ceremony of the Changing of the Guard at Arlington National Cemetery, and visited the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

“Alexander and Corker were eager and interested to connect with us, and we appreciated the opportunity to meet them,” said Dr. Rodgers. “It was also great to connect with Bill Huizenga, a congressman from Grand Rapids, Michigan, and the father of Lee music major Adrian Huizenga.”

Ladies of Lee frequently tours throughout the southeastern United States. Later this spring, the group will travel to Costa Rica to sing and serve.
