Dr. Ken Ferraro, distinguished professor of sociology at Purdue University and recipient of numerous National Health Institute grants, will present a lecture at Lee University on Monday at 4:30 p.m. The event will be held in the Johnson Lecture Hall, in Lee’s Humanities Center.

Dr. Ferraro will speak on “Disadvantage Turned Upside Down: Life Course Exposures and Adult Health.” His recent work has focused on health inequality over the life course and mediating factors that might reduce adversity. He has published articles that examine minority health, obesity and health, and early misfortune.  Recently, he has extended his work to focus on Hispanic health.

In 2011, Dr. Ferraro received the Distinguished Mentor Award from the Gerontological Society. He has served as the mentor for Dr. Tetyana Shippee of the University of Minnesota, the first recipient of the Lee University Behavioral and Social Sciences Alumni Award.

Dr. Ferraro also developed the theory of “Cumulative Inequality Disadvantage.”

Dr. Ferraro’s visit is sponsored by the Lee chapter of AKD, the International Sociology Honor Society. It is hosted by AKD and the Encore class of Drs. Karen Mundy and Ben Judkins.

The event is free, non-ticketed, and open to the public.
