Quick work by Chattanooga firefighters saved a local restaurant from fire late Tuesday afternoon.
The Chattanooga Fire Department received the alarm at 5:25 p.m. and responded to a reported commercial fire at the Captain D's at 5,000 Oak Hill Road off Highway 58.
Battalion Chief Brandon Schroyer, the incident commander, said heavy fire was visible on the outside of the structure when the first firefighters arrived.
The flames climbed up the exterior wall and penetrated into the awning above.
Chief Schroyer said the firefighters attacked the fire aggressively and had the flames extinguished in roughly 10 minutes. No injuries were reported.
Chief Schroyer said the cause of the fire will be ruled accidental, most likely from a cigarette that was improperly discarded into the mulch and other landscaping plants located next to the building.
With the fire being put out so quickly, the fire loss was estimated at just $20,000. Chief Schroyer was told the restaurant would be closed for a brief period of time until the damaged portion of the building is repaired.
The restaurant is located across from Food City.
