The Lee University School of Music will host a recital for the studio of Charlotte Kies, clarinetist, on Monday at 7:30 p.m. in Squires Recital Hall. This recital is one of four student, studio recitals to take place this semester.
The remaining three recitals to take place are for students from Ron Brendel Vocal Studio and Cheryl Brendel Vocal Studio on Tuesday, April 17, at 6 p.m.; Cahill Smith Piano Studio on Wednesday, April 18, at 6 p.m.; and Kristen Holritz Flute Studio on Wednesday, April 18, at 8 p.m. All performances will take place in Squires Recital Hall.
Ms. Kies is a clarinetist based in Chattanooga. She joined the Lee University School of Music faculty in 2017 and is a member of the Ohio Light Opera Orchestra. She was named the 2017 Second Prize Winner in the International Clarinet Association's Orchestral Audition Competition.
Cheryl Brendel, a coloratura soprano, has performed opera, recital, and oratorio in the United States, as well as in Germany and Italy. She has performed in several operas including “The Magic Flute,” “Cendrellon,” and “The Mikado.” She has been an adjunct professor in music at Lee since 2005.
Dr. Ron Brendel, professor of voice, has been on Lee University’s faculty since 2005. He has presented papers and lecture-recitals at the College Music Society and Hawaii International Conference on Arts and Humanities, among others. Apart from academia, Dr. Brendel has performed extensively with multiple operas and societies, including the Peach State Opera, South Florida Opera, Vero Beach Choral Society, and the Pensacola Choral Society.
Dr. Smith, associate professor of piano, joined Lee’s faculty in 2014. He began playing at age 10, and by 16, had made his orchestral debut with a local orchestra. In the United States and abroad, Dr. Smith has performed recitals in major venues including three programs at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall, the PolyTheater in Chongqing, China, and Kilbourn Hall.
Ms. Holritz, adjunct professor of flute at Lee, made her solo debut with the United States Air Force Band in 2005. In addition to teaching at Lee, she teaches at Southern Adventist University in Collegedale, Tennessee. Ms. Holritz is also Principal Flute with the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera.
Studio recitals are held at the end of each academic year to showcase the students’ study and accomplishments from private instruction.
The recitals are free, non-ticketed, and open to the public. Squires Recital Hall is in Lee’s Humanities Center.
