Election Administrator To Talk With UnifiEd PAC Director About Poll Watcher Issue

  • Monday, May 14, 2018

Election Administrator Kerry Steelman said, prior to the next election, he plans to talk with the director of the UnifiEd PAC about conduct of poll watchers.

Mr. Steelman said there were a few issues at the May 1 election when UnifiEd poll watchers had to be cautioned by election officials on what they could and could not do while inside the polls.

He said the UnifiEd PAC, which supported a slate of candidates, had indicated it would have 80-90 poll watchers taking part.

Mr. Steelman said it turned out to be 50, which was still a record number.

"I assume UnifiEd will be having more poll watchers at the August and November elections," he said.

He said he plans to meet with Jonas Barriere, who formerly headed UnifiEd, then went over to the PAC when it was formed in March. UnifiEd itself is a non-profit organization and is not suppose to be involved in individual political campaigns.

Mr. Steelman said some UnifiEd poll watchers called him to say that at four precincts in District 5 the poll supervisor did not print out the tape of the results and post it on the wall. That is for Kings Point 1 and 3 and Woodmore 1 and 2.

He said he asked the UnifiEd poll watchers to follow the election supervisors to the election office. After they arrived, he had the results printed out for the UnifiEd poll watchers.

UnifiEd backed newcomer Katherlyn Geter in District 5. She defeated fellow Democrat Greg Beck by 15 votes.

The Election Commission on Monday morning certified the results of the May 1 voting, including the tight District 5 contest.

Mr. Steelman said six of the precincts in District 5 were individually audited and no problems were found.

He said Commissioner Greg has until next Monday to file an appeal of the election results.
