Moore, Ellen Marie Schneider (Rising Fawn)

  • Monday, May 21, 2018

Ellen Marie Schneider Moore, of Rising Fawn, departed this life on May 20, 2018. Ellen Marie was born on August 5, 1934 in Tazewell, Tn. She grew up in Middlesboro, Ky. and loved walking downtown and being from the home of the historic Cumberland Gap. She survived polio at the age of 18, postponing her enrollment in college. Despite the late start, she graduated early, finishing in three years with a degree in Chemistry from Carson Newman College. She moved to Dade County, Ga. to live with cousins and teach at the high school. After meeting Donald (Dude) Moore, she decided to make this area her home permanently. Ellen was a life-long learner, completing her master’s degree from Peabody College at Vanderbilt University and the education specialist degree from University of West Georgia. She worked as a teacher in Dade County and at Gordon Lee High School. She was principal of Fairyland Elementary and director of the Mountain School on Lookout Mountain. She then served as curriculum director for the Dade County Board of Education. Additionally, she traveled the State of Georgia as an educational consultant, training the next generations of educators. She taught as an adjunct professor at Covenant College and the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga. Ellen Marie lived a life of service to her profession, her church and her community, serving on numerous committees and boards, including Delta Kappa Gamma Teachers Honors Sorority, New Salem United Methodist Church Women, Dessie Massey Scholarship Fund, Camp Lookout, the Bethlehem Center, Hutcheson Medical Center board of directors and many others. She invested her time and resources in hundreds of young people over her career and was always proud of the accomplishments of her former students. To know her was to love her, and to be taught by her was to attain an exceptional level of learning. She was also the proud mother of an Eagle Scout and grandmother of three Eagle Scouts. She believed in having a connection to the earth and God’s creation and she and Dude created a beautiful cattle farm on Lookout Mountain that continues to bring joy to many. She also loved Cloudland Canyon and worked tirelessly to support the State Park and preservation of this Natural Wonder. Perhaps her favorite connection to nature was through her beloved fishing obsession. She has caught salmon in Alaska, trout in the Northeast Georgia Mountains and catfish, bass, and brim in her own lake. She fished on almost every trip including California, Montana, Colorado and all over the Southeast.

Ellen Marie was preceded in death by her parents, Marion A. Schneider and Nora Hubble Schneider and her husband, Donald R. Moore Sr., her beloved “Dude”.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Rhonda Moore; her grandsons, Andy Moore and Sam Moore; and her grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Jon and Shanna Moore.

Ellen Marie was an only child, but dearly loved and treasured her numerous Hubble and Schneider cousins in Kentucky and Indiana.

The family wishes to thank three special angels, without whose help the last several years of her life would not have been possible to achieve. Thank you to Susan Colmore, Mary Lee Hammond and Brian Sarrell. The family also wishes to thank Thrive at Brow Wood Assisted Living. Ellen Marie loved every one there, both staff and residents, and it truly became a home to her.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, May 23 from 4-8 p.m. at Ryan Funeral Home, Trenton. Funeral service will be held at Trenton United Methodist Church on Thursday, May 24 at 3 p.m., with Rev. Jodie Ihfe officiating. Visitation will be at the church from 1-3 p.m. on Thursday and burial at Hawkins Cemetery immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Dessie Massey Scholarship Fund at New Salem United Methodist Church or the Holston United Methodist Home for Children, Greeneville, Tn.
