From The Woods Of Chickamauga To Belleau Wood: Battlefield Residents Fighting In The Great War

  • Friday, June 8, 2018

On Saturday, June 23, and on Sunday, June 24, Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park will present a series of living history programs and ranger-guided tours exploring the stories of the young men who grew up in the peaceful fields of one battlefield, only to experience the horrors of another as we commemorate the centennial of World War I.

World War I living history presentations will take place at Snodgrass Hill (Tour Stop 8), on Chickamauga Battlefield, at 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m., and 3:30 p.m.

on Saturday and Sunday. Additionally, at 2 p.m. each day, there will be a ranger-guided car caravan tour exploring the sites of the World War I training camps at Chickamauga. This tour begins at the Chickamauga Battlefield visitor center and lasts approximately 90 minutes.

In June 1918, the Battle of Belleau Wood raged in France. At this battle and throughout the European continent, young men fought in what was known as “The Great War.” However, among these soldiers were young men who grew up around another battlefield – Chickamauga. Still others grew up hearing tales of Chickamauga and the Civil War from their grandfathers. We hope you join us as we explore the connection between Chickamauga Battlefield and its World War I history.
