Cadence, Alan Shuptrine 2016, 20 x 24 inches, watercolor
Artist Alan Shuptrine and the Museum Center at 5ive Points are celebrating the land, culture, and people along the Appalachian Trail through excellence in watercolor and craftsmanship. Mr. Shuptrine, nationally recognized for his paintings, has created 60 watercolors for a body of work that celebrates the connections of our Appalachian mountains and their historical and cultural counterparts in the British Isles.
The Museum Center will display these works and highlight the parallels with the region’s history. This particular journey highlights Celtic traditions that were brought to America in the 18th Century, and are still practiced today. Mr. Shuptrine’s deep, technical excellence is exhibited in each painting, and highlighted in images of traditions such as quilt making, whiskey making, and fiddle playing, and views across the mountain ranges.
Mr. Shuptrine is currently collaborating with Jennifer Pharr Davis – New York Times best selling author, hiker, and National Geographic Adventurer of the Year – to create a coffee table book, pairing images of his works with her insight of the mountain area. Serving as a monument to the mountain trail, this collection, book and complementary documentary film will help preserve the unique heritage and traditions for future generations.
The collection will be on display at the Museum Center at 5ive Points starting Sept. 27 through Jan. 17. The exhibition originally opened at the Tennessee State Museum in May, 2017, in Nashville; continued to the Morris Museum of Art in Augusta, Ga., and traveled to the Huntsville Museum of Art in Huntsville before coming home to Cleveland in September 2018.
