Chattanooga firefighters responded to a reported fire at the old E. Brainerd Elementary School on E. Brainerd Road around 3:30 a.m. on Monday.
Battalion Chief David Thompson, Jr.
said the first firefighters on the scene reported fire showing from the front of the building. However, a Chattanooga police officer found a small fire near the rear of the structure. The firefighters broke through a classroom window to get their hose lines in. Once inside, they quickly put the fire out. No injuries were reported.
Chief Thompson said firefighters pulled a mattress out of the classroom, which suggests that someone may have been using the classroom for shelter. An estimate on the damages was not available. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
