Professional and amateur artists took to Barnhardt Circle in Fort Oglethorpe’s historic district to show their love of America through chalk art on Tuesday for Patriotism at The Post. Sponsored by Fort Oglethorpe Thriving Communities, Battleview Bed & Breakfast, Callahan Mechanical Contractors and NGEMC Operation Round Up, artists from as far away as Rhode Island created colorful works of temporary art and encouraged the public to join them in chalking it up.
Featured artists from Atlanta Zach Herndon, Meg Mitchell and Jessi Queen were joined throughout the day and evening by over 50 adults, students and children. Heather Cap took first place honors with “Hands of Freedom.” Charles Herndon took second place with his rendition of Captain America and Melissa Luhr’s “Lady Liberty” placed third. Local Rossville resident Alan Stamey II received honorable mention for “Blind Justice.”
Tabernacle Big Band performed the patriotic concert before fireworks lit up the night sky to celebrate America’s birthday. Event organizers estimated the crowd at 4,000 with food, arts and crafts and bounce house fun rounding out the evening. CHI Memorial Hospital provided shuttle service. This is the twelfth year for Patriotism at The Post, organized by the Fort Oglethorpe Tourism Association.
