Hugh A. Brown, Jr., universally known as “Mike” or “Michael” Brown, died on August 10, 2018. He would have been 78 on August 31.

Michael was the oldest child of the late Hugh A. Brown and Catherine Dineen Brown, who predeceased him. He was a graduate of Notre Dame High School and joined the Chattanooga Times Sports Department immediately after high school. For many years, he was a sports reporter for the Times with an emphasis on local sporting events. He had a devoted following and many friends who appreciated his sports expertise and, more importantly, his sweet spirit. He had most recently contributed to articles for The Chattanoogan.com.

His passions included the St. Louis Cardinals, New York Yankees, Notre Dame football, Kentucky basketball, politics, and most of all, his family and his church. An ardent Democrat, he was always prepared for a fervent discussion of the current political landscape.

He grew up in Our Lady of the Mount Catholic Church, but had most recently attended St. Steven Catholic Church until he moved to Alexian some months ago.

He is survived by his three brothers, David (Boomer) Brown, Chris (Sue Anne) Brown, and Greg (Zane) Brown; his sister, Katie (Don) Morton; as well as four nephews, Greg and Ben Brown, Hugh and Peter Morton; and two nieces, Kaki Brown Jenkins and Elizabeth Morton Doak. His cousins, Mary Agnes Phillips and George Fontaine, Jr., predeceased him. Michael is survived by three cousins, Sherma Dorsey, Tom McMahon, and the Rev. Joe McMahon.

Michael’s family would like to express its deep appreciation for the loving care and assistance Theresa Harmon provided Michael over the years.

Visitation will be at the Parish Hall at Our Lady of the Mount Catholic Church, Lookout Mountain, Georgia from 10:00-11:00 on Monday, August 20. The funeral service will follow at Our Lady of the Mount Catholic Church at 11:00 a.m.

Private burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, friends may make a contribution to Our Lady of the Mount Catholic Church, 1227 Scenic Highway, Lookout Mountain, GA 30750, or those wishing may send flowers to Wann Funeral Home.

Arrangements are by Wann Funeral Home and Cremation Center 4000 Tennessee Ave., Chattanooga, Tn. 37409.
