Chancellor Howell N. Peoples passed away on Friday, August 10, 2018, in Vero Beach, Florida, after a brief illness.

He was born in Knoxville, Tn., and grew up in Clinton, Tn.

Chancellor Peoples played the trumpet in the marching band at the University of Tennessee where he received a Degree in Business Administration in 1964 and a J.D. degree in 1966.

After serving in the Army he continued to serve as a Senior Staff Attorney at the University of Tennessee Legal Clinic supervising law students and providing legal services to indigent persons.  In 1972, he became executive director of the Legal Aid Society of Chattanooga.
He was appointed Clerk and Master of Hamilton County March 1975, and appointed Chancellor of Chancery Court Part II May 18, 1978, where he served for 32 years.  He was inducted into the Pro Bono Hall of Fame in 2016. Prior to his retirement he was an active member of the Chattanooga Civitan Club.

Other than his family, his passion was for the law.  He strived to always be fair and just in his rulings.

In his spare time he enjoyed being on his boat on lake Chickamauga fishing for large mouth bass. He also very much enjoyed following UTK sports teams. GBO!

Chancellor Peoples is survived by his wife, Linda, sons, Chris (Laura) and Cameron, and grandchildren, Connor and Emily.

He will be greatly missed by his family and all of his friends.

A celebration memorial service is tentatively scheduled at the Hamilton County Court House, Chancery Court Room Part II on Friday, Sept. 21, at 10 a.m.
