Maria St. Goar passed away on Wednesday, August 15, 2018, at her home.  

She was born in Matsue, Japan in 1928 a daughter of Dr. Fritz and Emmela Karsch, who were German citizens. The family lived in Japan throughout World War II. After the American occupation had begun, Maria Karsch accepted a position as an interpreter at the International War Crimes Tribunal in the Prosecution Section. She arrived in the United States in 1949.

Maria worked and volunteered her time as a translator of numerous Anthroposophical works by Rudolph Steiner and related authors from German into the English language that were then published in the United States and Great Britain.

She was a member of the Christian Community Church.

Married to Herbert St. Goar in 1954, she is survived today by her son, Edward and his wife Rebecca Tate St. Goar of Chattanooga and a daughter, Elisabeth St. Goar Wert of Greensboro, N.C. Her grandchildren include Ellen Wert Brown of Durham, N.C., Laura Wert Marcinkowski of Chapel Hill, N.C., Daniel Wert of Greensboro, N.C., Julia St. Goar (Carraher) of Lawrence, Ma., and Carl St. Goar of Chattanooga.

Memorial service arrangements will be announced at a later date. In keeping with her desire for privacy there will be no visitation. Burial will occur later at the Chattanooga National Cemetery.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to The Anthroposophical Society in America, 1923 Geddes Avenue, Ann Arbor, Mi. 48104-1797.
