The Share America Foundation, Inc. awarded its Catoosa County scholarship winner at Ringgold’s Patriot Hall in Ringgold.  Banjo player Trevor Holder, 17, of Ringgold, was selected as a Pearl and Floyd Franks Scholarship winner as a designee when he was 14. He received a $1,000 scholarship.

“It was a blessing to have my love of bluegrass acknowledged,” he said. “I have always looked up to several of the Pearl and Floyd Franks Scholarship recipients, especially those from Mountain Cove. I am honored to be included among such talented fellow music enthusiasts.”

Mr. Holder said he will use the funds to assist in his studies in electrical engineering at Kennesaw State College this fall. He is a graduate at Heritage High School in Ringgold, and completed through dual-enrollment a two-year degree from Dalton College.

He began his musical career playing with his brother, Garrett, and currently performs with the Nashville-based band Southern Flavor performing the 1940s music of Bill Monroe.

“My greatest inspiration on the banjo is Don Reno,” he said. “I have also met some of my banjo heroes, like Ralph Stanley and Eddie Adcock.”

Mr. Holder is the son of Gary Holder and Angela Holder, and the grandson of Judy and the late Gene Holder, and David and Dimple Gattis, all of Ringgold.

The Pearl and Floyd Franks Scholarship honors students excelling in the Appalachian musical arts. Pearl and Floyd Franks are the late parents and former entertainment managers of actor/entertainer Randall Franks, "Officer Randy Goode" from TV's "In the Heat of the Night."

Share America Foundation Board members include Mr. Franks; Vice Chairman Jimmy Terrell; Chairman Gary Knowles, Secretary James Pelt; and Jerry Robinson, Sr., vice president.

The next Sacred Sounds Fridays is Nov. 9 at 7:30 p.m. featuring the Gospel Hall of Famer Jeff Hullender Family and the Testimony Quartet at the Ringgold’s Patriot Hall, 320 Emberson Dr. Admission is a $10 donation.  Mr. Franks will host the event.
