Dr. Michael Smith
Lee University’s Dr. Michael Ray Smith, professor of public relations, had a chapter, titled “Promoting accuracy and advocacy in the age of competing voices,” published in “Words and Witnesses,” a book on notable Christians throughout the ages.
Dr. Smith’s chapter focuses on clergyman turned editor, Charles M. Sheldon. The chapter is based on his book “Fake News, Truth-Telling, and Charles M. Sheldon’s Model of Accuracy” that was published earlier this year.
“Words and Witnesses,” a Hendrickson publication edited by Robert H. Woods and Naaman Wood, includes 43 entries by scholars from across the nation who are interested in the intersection of Christianity and communication.
Dr. Smith has written eight books, nine peer reviewed journal articles, seven chapters for books such as "Words and Witnesses," and hundreds of articles for the popular press. He has also presented workshops in the United States and overseas, including a seminar on magazine writing for Magazine Training International. This year he will conduct focus group research in Nairobi, Kenya.
In late 2015, College Media Advisers presented Dr. Smith with the Noel Ross Strader Memorial Award and in 2012, journalismdegree.org named him one of the best 50 journalism educators in the nation. Campbell University selected Dr. Smith for the first teaching excellence award for all the six schools of the university, which includes law and pharmacy. He was also named the John McCandlish Phillips Scholar for 2011 by the World Journalism Institute.
As an award winning journalist and photographer, Dr. Smith has been quoted in periodicals such as the Arizona Republic, the Boston Globe, the Chicago Tribune, and the New York Times.
Apart from Dr. Smith’s service in Lee’s Department of Communication Arts, he is also part of the graduate faculty at Regent University, where he is teaching Historical and Rhetorical Methods online in the doctoral program.
Dr. Smith received his doctorate from Regent University, his master’s from Shippensburg University, and his bachelor’s from the University of Maryland.
