Lee University Theatre will host guest artist Jackie Murray on Monday, Sept. 10, at 7 p.m. in the Dixon Center, where she will perform Harriet Tubman: One Woman’s Journey.

Review for Harriet Tubman: One Woman’s Journey:

The show follows Harriet Tubman, as portrayed by Ms. Murray, as she makes the dangerous journey North with fellow runaway slaves, who are played by the audience from their seats. Within the show, the audience watches Tubman struggle with her faith, discover the importance of the Emancipation Proclamation, and learns how the Abolitionist Movement re-shaped our country.

Harriet Tubman: One Woman’s Journey is a one-woman show written by Ms. Murray and is presented in voice and song. The show has been touring various schools in Arkansas and Tennessee and was presented at The Imperial Dinner Theatre in Arkansas and The Hattiloo Theatre in Memphis.

Ms. Murray, represented by the Lisa Lax Agency, is a member of the Hattiloo Theatre Company. She most recently appeared in the musical “Sarafina!” In February, she will appear in August Wilson’s “Seven Guitars.” She has also performed at DeSoto Family Theatre, Harrell Theatre, and Playhouse on the Square, as well as several local commercials and films. Ms. Murray lives by her motto, “Not pursuing your dreams is like being a bird that is afraid of heights.”

Ms. Murray will also perform several shows for local schoolchildren on Sept. 10 and 11. This event is funded in part by the Tennessee Arts Commission. Additionally, the Allied Arts Council of Cleveland and Bradley County Chamber of Commerce is providing funds for school students to see the show for free.

Lee Theatre’s season will continue with “Talley’s Folly” on Sept. 28-29 and Oct. 4-6 at 7:30 p.m. in the Buzz Oates Theatre. This show, written by Lanford Wilson, will be directed by senior theatre and music major Anna Marie Brendel.

The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, by Joseph Robinette based on the book by CS Lewis, will continue the season in November under the direction of Associate Professor of Theatre Daniel Buck. The show will take place Nov. 2-3 and 8-10 at 7:30 p.m. in the Buzz Oates Theatre, with a matinee on Nov. 3 at 2:30.

Mr. Buck directs the next show of the season, This Random World, in February 2019. This show, written by Steven Dietz, will take place Feb. 15-16 and 21-23 at 7:30 p.m. in the Buzz Oates Theatre.

The season will conclude in April 2019 with Meet Me in St. Louis, which will be a joint production with the Lee University School of Music. Dr. Christine Williams will direct the show, with music direction by Dr. Ron Brendel, and choreography by Heidi Longwith.

Tickets for Ms. Murray’s Monday evening performance of Harriet Tubman: One Woman’s Journey are $5 and can be purchased on showclix.com/event/harriet-tubman. The performance is ideal for audience members aged five and up.
