Animals Displaced By Hurricane Florence To Arrive at HES Late Thursday Night

  • Thursday, September 13, 2018

The Humane Educational Society has a van in transit to South Carolina to pick up 20 animals from shelters in the path of Hurricane Florence. Due to evacuation traffic, the animals are not expected to arrive at the Humane Educational Society until 12 or 1 a.m. Friday morning. Shelter staff and volunteers are rallying to quickly set up temporary shelter for the first of many animals that will be arriving out of harms way at HES.

The Humane Educational Society is partnering with The Humane Society of the United States and prepping to receive a large number of displaced animals from areas affected by Hurricane Florence. This is peak time for shelters around the country; most, including HES are at max capacity. While the first priority is the animals and citizens of Hamilton County, HES has a reputation for helping out in times of crisis. Officials said they feel that it is their responsibility as animal welfare advocates to help the neighbors in South Carolina and North Carolina both two legged and four legged.

HES is in the process of setting up a temporary shelter behind its building to house additional animals. None of the animals being transferred to HES are owned pets. However, HES staff will scan every animal in an attempt to make sure that no owned animals have been caught up in the chaos of Florence’s aftermath.

HES will be offering an adoption special on adult dogs of $25 and $15 for cats in order to make space for displaced animals arriving at the shelter. Foster families are also needed to house animals and provide additional space at the shelter. The most pressing needs are for food to help care for the animals as well as monetary donations to provide medical care for any animals that have become sick or injured as a result of Hurricane Florence. All animals will need to be vaccinated, tested for heartworms, spayed and neutered.

To become an HES foster parent please contact Jordan Taylor at 624-5302 x250. Adoptable animals can be viewed here https://www.heschatt.org/adopt/available-pets/. To adopt please visit the shelter at 212 N. Highland Park Ave. during our hours of operation; Monday through Saturday 11 a.m.-5 p.m. the shelter is open until 6 p.m. on Thursdays and from 12-4 p.m. on Sunday.
