Dalton Women's Soccer Holds On For Tie With Maine-Fort Kent

  • Sunday, September 16, 2018
An exciting match would come down to the final seconds of play as Dalton State held on for a 2-2 tie against Maine-Fort Kent at Lakeshore Park Soccer Complex in Dalton on Saturday.

Dalton State would jump out an attack hard from the onset, but they would struggle to finish off with goals. They would out shoot UMFK 8-2 in the first half. The Lady Birds would finally find pay dirt with seven seconds before the half when Andrea Lopez cut through two defenders and knock it past Alyse Kline for the 1-0 lead as the teams went into the break.

UMFK would turn up the intensity in the second half.
They would be the ones dictating the pace of play and found some opportunities, but would come up just short. They would finally get on the board in the 59' when Hope Shea intercepted a pass just short of mid-field and took it straight to goal to tie the match at 1-1.

UMFK would not be done. With time clicking away, Veronica Paz would go to goal in the 81' and receive a ball from Tolu Oyeniyi and find the back of the net for a 2-1 lead. The Lady Roadrunners would waste no time getting back on the attack. A beautiful shot from Adriana Delgado would go off the post in the 85', but Alyssa Bilbrey would be there to clean it up and tie the match at 2-2.

Time would run out in regulation as both teams would head to overtime.

Dalton State would get on the ball quick in the first overtime, but could not convert the opportunity into a goal. The rest of the match would be played in the mid-field area as both tired teams struggled to mount an attack. With just a few second left, Tolu Oyeniyi would squirt out with a lead pass and head to goal uncontested. She would lob a shot on goal right as time expired that would hit the post and come down right in front of the line. Joanna Peralta would wrangle the ball as the match would end in a 2-2 tie.

Dalton State not sits at 4-1-1 overall on the season. Andrea Lopez and Alyssa Bilbrey both collected goals for the Lady Roadrunners, with Lopez notching her team leading fifth. Dalton State would out shoot UMFK 15-6 overall, 8-5 on goal, but struggle to find the back of the net.

The Lady Roadrunners will have a short turnaround as they will be back in action on Sunday when they hit the pitch against Oakwood (Ala.). Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
