University of Tennessee President Joe DiPietro said he will step down from active service on Nov. 21.

His official retirement date is Feb. 14, 2019, but he will use his remaining vacation time.

Dr. DiPietro became the 25th president of the University of Tennessee on Jan. 1, 2011.

He served as chancellor of the UT Institute of Agriculture from 2006 to 2010.

Tennessee Board of Regents Chancellor Flora W. Tydings said, "The Tennessee Board of Regents and the College System of Tennessee thank University of Tennessee President Joe DiPietro for his years of service to UT, to the people of Tennessee and to the students we serve.

"Dr. DiPietro has led the UT System with integrity, credibility, honor and distinction, enabling its campuses to focus on improving student success, academics, research and public service.  He has helped strengthen the partnerships between our two public higher education systems, with a goal of improving the lives of all Tennesseans. Our community and technical colleges work closely with the UT campuses, and thousands of our graduates continue their educations at UT.

"We congratulate Dr. DiPietro on his upcoming retirement and wish him the best. He’s a true Tennessee Volunteer whose impact and legacy will be felt for generations."
