Chesser, Betty C. (Tunnel Hill)

Betty C. Chesser, 88, of Tunnel Hill, passed away Tuesday, September 18, 2018 at her residence. 

She was the daughter of the late Rev. Ernest B. Coon and Jimmie Rowe Coon and was preceded in death by her sister, Lee King.

Betty graduated from Tift College and then earned her Master’s degree from UTC in Chattanooga. She taught for 44 years in public schools and taught developmental reading at Dalton State College. Betty was named the Tom Jones Educator of the Year in 1993 and was awarded the Star Teacher Award three times. Over her years of teaching, Betty was given the nickname “Hurricane Betty” by her students. She was loved by her students and she would keep in touch with them long after she had taught them.

She is survived by her daughter, Paula Tetrault of Atlanta; sons, William Chesser Jr. (Karen) of Tunnel Hill and Tim Chesser (Tammy) of Ringgold; grandchildren, Samantha Fraser (Ted) of Cumming, Ga., Kristen Floyd (Nick) of League City, Tx., Meagan Bingham (Stephen) of Chatsworth, William Chesser III of Tunnel Hill, Joseph Tetrault of Marietta, Taitlyn Chesser of Maryville, Tn., and Taylor Chesser of Ringgold; great-grandchildren, Madison and Austin Fraser, Graeme Floyd, and Claire Bingham; sister, Jere Blocker (Colonel Norman Blocker) of Albuquerque; and nieces and nephews. 

A memorial service will be held Sunday, Sept. 30, at 3:30 p.m. at Rockbridge Community Church with the Rev. Matt Evans officiating. 

The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:30-3:30 p.m. 

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Georgia Baptist Children’s Home (2930 Flowers Road, Atlanta, GA 30341) or Dalton Education Foundation (P.O. Box 1408 Dalton, Ga 30722-1408).
