Students from all corners of campus will gather together Monday, Oct. 1, at 8 p.m. in the Paul Dana Walker Arena for Lee’s annual Dorm Wars competition. This year, Residential Life and Housing is introducing significant changes to the event.
“It’s no secret that this year is Lee’s Centennial Celebration,” said Alex Staup, resident director for Carroll Court and Spring Creek. “We’re excited to take this opportunity to take Dorm Wars to the next level by increasing our service emphasis and drastically improving our production value — think lights, camera, action.”
The competition will pit teams of residence hall representatives against one another in a series of obstacle courses and relay races that will test the students’ physical and mental prowess, all while raising money for nonprofit organizations benefiting the local community.
Along with the regular events, residence hall teams are also scored on the opening intro routine, which each team choreographs and performs at the beginning of the event.
This year’s residence hall partnerships will benefit New Hope Pregnancy Care Center, Backyard Ministry, ANDOR: Passage to Manhood, City Fields, Project Free 2 Fly, Bridge Refugee Services, The Caring Place, the Boys & Girls Club of the Ocoee Region, Foundation House Ministries, Habitat for Humanity, Girls on the Run, and Second Life Chattanooga.
“Our residence halls truly do a remarkable job supporting and partnering with the many organizations in our community, and we look forward to supporting them again this year,” Mr. Staup said. “We are incredibly thankful for our community sponsors who support these service organizations through Dorm Wars.”
Students from each residence hall, along with a designated faculty sponsor, will volunteer to compete for their dorm’s chosen cause. Other Lee staff members will be involved as officials and scorekeepers.
This year will mark the return of both the mystery event and the faculty obstacle course, and it will also introduce three separate divisions for the competition: male dorms, traditional female dorms, and upperclassmen female dorms. Three dorms, instead of two, will now walk away with the coveted title of “Dorm Wars Champion” at the end of the night.
“Dorm Wars is without a doubt the event of the year in terms of total campus involvement, fun, and impact on the community,” said Jake Rice, a junior journalism major and resident assistant for Bowdle/O’Bannon Halls. “It is Lee’s own, and there is nothing like it. I love seeing the entire campus come together and get passionate about such a good cause.”
Admission is free and open to the public, with a spectator section reserved for campus guests. The event will also be available for live stream viewing on Facebook or at https://livestream.com/leeu.
