The Lee University Wind Ensemble
Lee University’s Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. David Holsinger, will begin its 20th season with a performance on Tuesday, Oct. 9, at 7:30 p.m. in the Conn Center.
The concert will be an all-American composer evening, featuring music by Rick Kirby and Samuel Barber, along with two pieces by early 20th century composer, Charles Ives, including an arrangement written for the U.S. Marine Band of his “March No. 6 – Here’s to Good Old Yale.”
William Schuman’s band masterwork, “Chester,” and Morton Gould’s “Pavanne” will provide a contrast of styles. Music from veteran composer Larry Daehn and marches by John Phillip Sousa will round out the evening. Dr. Holsinger will also conduct a new composition,“Fantasy on Old Hundred,” composed especially to celebrate the university’s Centennial.
“We had a lot of graduations last year and nearly 37 percent of the ensemble are first year members,” said Dr. Holsinger. “The new players are doing great work, and it’s a fine group with which to kick off the next 100 years.”
The Lee University Wind Ensemble is committed to the highest level of performance of instrumental ensemble literature for winds and percussion, said officials. It is a non-traveling ensemble that performs for special concerts on the Lee University campus throughout the year.
“Being the 20th season for the ensemble and the Centennial year for the university, we have a busy first semester,” said Dr. Holsinger. In addition to the ensemble’s two regularly scheduled first semester concerts, there will be added celebrations in November, plus the Lee Honor Band collage concert with the Symphonic Band and Jazz Ensemble prior to a Saturday Honor Band concert on Nov. 17.
