A Chattanooga man has been charged with killing a Huntsville Police officer on Friday night.

LaJeromeny Brown, 41, is facing a capital murder charge and was arrested Friday night.

Police had set up a drug buy at a house on Levert Street. Police said Brown immediately shot Billy Clardy III.

He was struck outside his bulletproof vest.

Brown tried to flee, but was soon captured.

The 14-year veteran officer was taken to the hospital in critical condition and later died.

In October of last year, Chattanooga Police said Brown impersonated an officer and robbed a homeowner at gunpoint. He then led police on a high-speed chase through Chattanooga Thursday.

At the time police said Brown was considered a violent felon.

Huntsville Police said Brown had an extensive criminal record and was well known to officers.
