Lookout Mountain Elementary School
Lookout Mountain, Tn., would lose its public elementary school under the preliminary version of a facilities report for the Hamilton County Schools.
The rock-clad school on Bragg Avenue, which has been operated by the county since 1927, has 157 students currently.
That is projected to drop to 134 in 2028, according to the report, which says the county schools have too many small schools.
Lookout Mountain School officials note that the K-5 schools has been designated a Tennessee Reward School for the past three years for being among the top five percent of schools in performance.
The Tennessee school gets extra help from the Lookout Mountain, Tn., Commissioner, which has an education commissioner who focuses on the school.
Across the state line in Georgia on the mountain, Walker County operates Fairyland School.
It was 1878 when the “Little Red School House” opened as the first school on Lookout Mountain, serving residents in both Tennessee and Georgia.
By 1900, Lookout Mountain, Tn., had a new school.
In 1929, two years after the county began operating the school, the current school was built.
School officials noted that Lookout Mountain School "became the first school in Hamilton County to begin a planned schedule of school desegregation in 1962."
Officials said, "With the dedication and collaboration of our community and Parent Teacher Association, LMS has upgraded and transformed its space to offer students an excellent education with access to the latest technology, as well as cultural and athletic experiences. Our school includes a 8,000-square-foot addition to the main building that houses an art studio, science lab, K-2 computer writing lab, and state-of-the art Kindergarten classrooms. Our library includes a true Multi-Media Center.
"Our landscaped grounds include a playground, football field, new fencing, underground irrigation systems, and an outdoor science/art classroom with a water feature. LMS also houses an indoor skating rink that is maintained by the town of Lookout Mountain and open to the community throughout the year."
