The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s tennis team opened the 2019-20 season at the Austin Peay Fall Classic today. The Mocs scored four singles and one doubles win on the first day of action in Clarksville, Tenn.
Freshman Jessie Young led the way with two singles wins in Flight 1. She opened with a three-set victory over Murray State’s top player, Claire Young [6-2, 0-6, 1-0 (6)]. That was followed by a (6-4, 6-0) win over Southeast Missouri’s Vivian Lai to advance to the semifinals.
“It was a great day,” stated head coach Chad Camper. “Jessie is in the semifinals in singles and doubles and is off to a great start. Both Bogdana and Polina lost their first round matches but battled back for big wins in the consolations.
“We have one more day and are focusing on getting better tomorrow.”
Young and junior Bogdana Zaporozhets teamed up in the doubles Flight 2. They had a bye in the first round and advanced in the main draw with a win over Murray State’s Sharapova and Slezakova (6-2).
Zaporozhets scored a (6-3, 6-4) win over Belmont’s Erin Allen in the Flight 1 consolations singles. Sophomore Polina Goloputova was down up 6-2, but down 5-0 in the second set, against SEMO’s Ksenya Zonova in the Flight 1 consos. She won seven straight games to close out the win (6-2, 7-5).
Freshman Callie Billman had to retire from action due to a nagging wrist injury. UTC wraps up play in the tournament tomorrow.
