Friday night's rivalry game between the Silverdale Lady Seahawks and Notre Dame Fighting Irish was more like a heavyweight fight, complete with body blows, bloody noses -- both literal and physical -- and one huge knockout punch.

That punch was landed by the Lady Seahawks in a dominant 8-0 overtime period that gave them a 59-51 victory after a thrilling back-and-forth contest. Junior Laney Bone led Silverdale with 21 points, while Becca Lamb scored 12 and Tessa Gibson followed with 11.

"I kind of go back to our Christmas break; we were struggling and had lost four out of five, and it was a time for our team to figure out what we needed to fix," said Silverdale coach Victor Underwood, whose team moves to 6-0 in Division II-A East Region District 2.

"We just all came together and said that we have to keep fighting. We're doing the right thing, and we have to stick with it, and that's what the girls did tonight. They stuck with it and were resilient, and I'm really proud of them."

The Lady Seahawks (13-6, 6-0) looked like they were in firm control in the opening rounds of the bout, opening up an 18-7 lead at the end of the first quarter with Bone scoring eight. Notre Dame (13-6, 4-2) came out ice-cold from the floor, going 0-for-10 from beyond the 3-point line in the period.

To make matters worse for the Lady Irish, their leading scorer Kate Ford -- who broke her nose against Baylor a week ago in a game against Baylor -- caught an elbow to the face less than two minutes into the game that left her nose bloodied. Ford -- who entered the game just 86 points shy of the Lady Irish's all-time scoring record -- was able to return, but finished with just four points.

"We knew this was going to be a tough environment, and one of those games where how well you shoot the ball and how the fouls are called would probably determine the outcome of the game, and quite frankly they shot the ball better than we did.," said Notre Dame coach Jason Hill. "All credit to Silverdale and how they pressured us tonight. They kind of got us out of our game early. But I'm proud of the girls for getting it to overtime, and I feel like we're right where we need to be."

Lamb picked up the scoring the second quarter for the Lady Seahawks with a bucket in the opening minute and a triple at the 5:32 mark that gave Silverdale its largest lead of the game at 23-9. Notre Dame went 5-of-6 from the charity stripe in the period and closed the gap to nine at halftime.

Notre Dame came out of the locker room swinging, and all of the shots that weren't falling in the first half suddenly found the bottom of the net. Five different Lady Irish players made 3-pointers as the team shot 50% from behind the arc in the period. Notre Dame outscored the Lady Seahawks 19-10 and a game that had been dominated by Silverdale in the first half was all of a sudden tied heading into what everyone thought was the final round.

Notre Dame landed the first blow of the fourth quarter on a basket by Kenzie Campbell to take its first lead since early in the opening quarter. The guard was a steadying force throughout the game for the Lady Irish, scoring at least four points in each quarter for a team-high 17 points.

Silverdale's Tori Gibson countered with a bucket to tie the game again, and Notre Dame's Jolie McGann --who finished with ten points -- knocked down a 3-pointer with 5:32 to go in the game to give her team its largest lead at 42-39.

That lead was short-lived, as the Lady Irish didn't score again for over two minutes, and the Lady Seahawks took advantage with a 7-0 run to pull ahead 46-42. Ford fouled out of the game at the end of that run, and while she had a tough night shooting, Hill acknowledged that losing her ball-handling and intangibles down the stretch hurt his team.

"Once Kate fouled out, we had to change our lineup and that hurts you down the stretch of big games," said Hill. "Kate is so much more than points for us. She handles the ball and is an unbelievable defender. She draws so much attention that it frees other people up."

After a Makyla Skaggs bucket closed the gap to two for the Lady Irish, McGann made a put-back and was fouled with 2:27 to go. Her made free-throw gave Notre Dame a one-point lead again.

With Silverdale still trailing by a point and just over a minute remaining, Bone drew a foul as she drove across the lane, and calmly stepped up and made both free throws to wrestle the lead back.

"To be honest, I really felt like I've been struggling at the free throw line," admitted Bone. "But at that time, I just knew I had to step up and make those free throws. This game was exciting for me, but also a little frustrating because I kept getting double-teamed. But my main focus tonight was to get the win because this was a rival."

Senior Marlee Montgomery added another free throw with eight seconds left to give the Lady Seahawks a 51-49 lead.

Hill called a timeout with 3.4 seconds remaining and his team taking the ball out just in front of the scorers' table. The ball went in to McGann, and when everyone was covered she was forced to take the shot herself from just outside the lane. The shot fell as the buzzer sounded, forcing overtime with the score tied at 51.

Silverdale came out with the finishing flurry in overtime. Bone was aggressive offensively in the four-minute extra period, scoring on a turnaround jumper from the right block, and then again from the left block in the first two minutes to give the Lady Seahawks a four-point lead. Tessa Gibson went 4-for-4 from the free-throw line in the final minute and a half to seal the win for her team.

"I just had to keep a scorer's mindset," said Bone of her offensive approach in the extra frame. "My coaches just told me to keep attacking the basket."

"Lanie has grown so much in her understanding of what we're trying to do," Underwood said. "It's hard to get Lanie the ball sometimes because a lot of teams double-team her. We can throw new stuff at her a day before a game and she just understands what we're trying to do. Even some of the stuff we ran in overtime tonight we just put in recently."

"This is an older group and they've been battle-tested. We played in a lot of close games last year with this same group, and they did a great job tonight."

Notre Dame Boys 50, Silverdale Baptist 36: Bryson Smith scored 16 points to lead the Fighting Irish to a 14-point victory over the Seahawks. Teammate Cal Price had 12 points, while Hayden Spurgeon chipped in nine.

Smith scored eight in the first quarter as Notre Dame (11-10, 5-1) jumped out to a 17-6 lead over the home team. After Silverdale (7-8, 2-4) cut into the lead before halftime, trimming it to nine, the Fighting Irish put the game away in the third quarter, when they outscored the Seahawks 19-19.

Owen Neal led the Seahawks with nine points, while Jordan Sanders followed with eight.
