"Rolling" Of East Brainerd Home Leads To Damaging Fire
posted February 5, 2007

Fire caused extensive damage to a home in East Brainerd on Monday morning.

The Chattanooga Fire Department received the alarm at 9:39 a.m. and responded to 8306 Grinder Creek Place with several fire companies.

Battalion Chief Winston Shields said the attached garage was engulfed in flames when the first firefighters arrived on the scene.

Chattanooga firefighters worked quickly to get the fire out, managing to contain most of the fire damage to the garage and a room above. However, the damage was substantial.

Adding the loss of a Toyota Highlander in the garage, the loss was estimated at around $100,000. No injuries were reported.

Homeowner Tom Norville told fire investigators that his house had been "rolled" with toilet paper over the weekend. He said he used a lighter to burn some of the toilet paper off of a tree in the yard, placed the burned up debris and ashes in a plastic trash bag, and then placed the bag in a plastic garbage container in the garage. A short time later, he discovered his garage was on fire.

Captain Lesley Morgan and Senior Firefighter Anthony Moore are investigating the incident. For now, the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
