Hixson Home Extensively Damaged In Early Morning Fire
posted February 23, 2007

Chattanooga firefighters responded to a house fire in Hixson early Friday morning. It started just after 1 a.m. at 803 Sutton Drive. Kathie McCarver said a noise woke her up, and when she looked out her bedroom window, she saw flames. She woke her husband and daughter, and with their two pet dogs, escaped the house unharmed.

The first call to 911 was received at 1:15 a.m. and the Chattanooga Fire Department responded with four fire companies. Captain Kinney Short with Engine 22 said the fire appears to have started in a storage shed, which was located just a few feet from the attached garage. When the fire entered the garage, Captain Short said the flames ignited an acetylene tank, which produced a small explosion. Captain Short said that explosion helped spread the flames very quickly to other parts of the two-story house. Strong winds were also a factor. At one point, blowing embers started a small woods fire nearby, which also had to be extinguished by the firefighters.

Lieutenant Henry McElvain with the Fire Investigation Division estimated the dollar loss at $225,000 for the house and its contents, including two cars in the garage. Two other cars outside were damaged. The Red Cross was notified to check on the victims. The cause of the fire is undetermined and under investigation.
