Forest Hills Cemetery, established in 1881, with 40,000 interments, is offering two new volunteer programs, through their Friends of Forest Hills Association. Steve Daugherty. Sr., president of the Friends' Association is a board member of Forest Hills. He is also a great-great grandson of one of the founders, Abraham Malone Jonson.
Mr. Daugherty stated that the two programs will be "Walking Tour Guides" and "Historic Forest Hills Stroll."
The Walking Tours Guide Program will begin later this spring, and volunteers are being solicited now. There will be a Saturday morning training program, at the cemetery. Contact either Steve Daugherty at stevedaugherty@bellsouth.net or 423-875-5250 or Barbara Chandler at the cemetery at 821-4161.
The second program, scheduled for the spring of 2008 will be modeled after the Maple Hill Stroll at Rose Hill in Huntsville, Al. Over 80 re-enactors, who assume the personages of a deceased person buried in the cemetery, present scripted biographical sketches, at the gravesite, in period-appropriate clothing. Over 4,000 attended Rose Hills Stroll last May. People who would like to be re-enactors or actors are currently being solicited. Any deceased person, interred at Forest Hills, will be considered. Scripts are approved by the board.
The Forest Hills Friends Association is planning a trip to this years' stroll at Rose Hill in Huntsville. Contact Steve or Barbara for more information. The dates of the Walking Tour Training will be in April.
