Red Bank Fire Department Battles Duplex Blaze
posted February 26, 2007

The Red Bank Fire Department stopped a fire from destroying a duplex early Monday morning.

A 9-1-1 call came in at 12:15 a.m. reporting heavy smoke at 2515 Briggs Ave.

The Red Bank Fire Department responded and arrived on the scene within minutes reporting heavy smoke coming from all the eaves of the duplex.

Fire Chief Mark Matthews said, “When we were clear on no possible entrapment, we went to a defensive attack because the first and second floors of both units had collapsed due to the significant amount of fire inside the duplex.”

The department used ladder trucks to get the fire under control. Chief Matthews requested a mutual aid response for the Soddy-Daisy Fire Department and the Walden’s Ridge Emergency Services to “stand-by” in Red Bank’s district in the event of another emergency.

Hamilton County EMS was on the scene for potential injuries to the firefighters. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire will be under investigation by the Red Bank Fire Department. Chief Matthews said an electrical malfunction could possibly be to blame.

No one was home at the time. One side of the duplex was occupied by Benny Woody. The other side was vacant. Mr. Woody did have insurance.

The duplex sustained heavy fire and smoke damage estimated at around $80,000.

The Red Bank Fire Department was assisted by the Soddy-Daisy Fire Department, the Walden’s Ridge Emergency Services, Hamilton County EMS and the Red Bank Police Department.
