Baylor School's new Leadership Baylor Speaker Series kicks off Monday setting the stage for guest speakers from a variety of professional backgrounds who will serve as exemplary models of leadership for students.
The speaker series is a new component of the Leadership Baylor Program, which was launched in 2005 to reach out to all students and help them discover and develop their unique leadership skills.
Bill Curry was hired this year as the program's Executive Director. "I am asked on a daily basis about my passion for great leaders and their stories. When I reflect on the powerful influences that became part of the fabric of my life, I can recall three essential forms of communication. They are personal example, the written word, and the spoken word. Every one of our speakers has excelled in at lease two of the three above areas," said Mr. Curry.
This year's featured speakers include:
Monday, March 12 - Ricky Thomas, an assistant coach with the world champion Indianapolis Colts, graduated from the University of Alabama where he was a team captain, a member of the All-SEC Academic Team and the recipient of the Jerry Duncan "I Like to Practice Award" his senior year. He also served as a member of the University of Kentucky coaching staff.
Monday, March 26 - Jeffrey Marx won a Pulitzer Prize in 1986 at age 23 for investigative reporting on cheating in college basketball. From there, he continued with his writing, including four books and countless newspaper and magazine articles as a free-lance journalist. He is also co-founder and director of the non-profit Wendy Marx Foundation for Organ Donor Awareness.
Monday, April 23 - Bart Starr led the Green Bay Packers to five NFL titles and two Super Bowl Championships. He currently manages Healthcare Realty Management in Birmingham and is co-founder of the Rawhide Boys Ranch, a non-profit program assisting and counseling at-risk youths.
Monday, April 30 - Dr. Carolyn Curry is the founder and director of Women Alone Together, a non-profit foundation dedicated to building confidence and community for the growing number of women who are alone because of divorce, death of a spouse, single by choice or alone in a marriage.
Monday, May 14 - Charles Martin is the author of five books, including When Crickets Cry, Wrapped in Rain, and The Dead Don't Dance. Before his first book was published, Charles worked as an adjunct professor, a Doctoral Fellow, and an insurance agent.
