America Needs To Rethink Global Warming - And Replies posted March 24, 2007 There are a few inconvenient truths Al Gore, and the rest of America, should know about his global warming theory. Al Gore is selling the theory that carbon dioxide emissions from humans are the main cause for global warming. I will not deny that the planet is going through a climate change. I will, however, argue the fact that humans are to blame. First of all, from the 1940’s to the 1980’s, the public was told that the earth was going through a global cooling, despite the fact that production and release of CO2 increased significantly during that time. So just 27 years ago the media was warning that the earth was cooling; now it is warming…which one is it? If the earth were going through an accelerated greenhouse effect caused by CO2, the troposphere (the layer of the earth’s atmosphere about 10-15 km above us) should be heating up faster than the rest of the planet. However, data collected by satellites and weather balloons does not support that this is happening. Ice samples taken from the Antarctica show us that the rise in carbon dioxide levels lags behind temperature rise by about 800 years; that is a massive piece of evidence, which tells us that humans are not the true cause of global warming. Another fact to dispute Gore’s theory is that the average temperature of the earth has risen by about one degree over the past 100 years. Most of that rise in temperature took place during the first half of that time period; while increases in man-made greenhouse gasses took place in the second half. If greenhouse gases were the true cause of global warming, wouldn’t be expect that to be the exact opposite? Do we trust Al Gore when he claims he has a team of acclaimed scientists backing him up? Who are these scientists? The IPCC, or the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, are a major one. The report they released was the main reason the media started claiming that man was the cause of global warming. In 1996, the IPCC released a report on climate change which was later exposed as having two important statements edited out of them: “None of these studies has shown clear evidence that we can attribute these observed climate changes to increase in greenhouse gasses.” “No study to date has positively attributed all or part of these climate changes…to man-made causes.” Are the IPCC really a reliable source of scientific data? So if Al Gore’s theory that man is the cause of global warming is false, then why is the planet warming? The answer is quite simple…- sunspots. When there is more activity of the sun, the temperature on earth goes up. The sun is 99% of our galaxy; when it changes, we change. Sunspot records clearly show that sunspot activity has been increasing since the mid 1970’s, matched by rising temperatures on earth. Sunspot activity precisely matches the change in temperature on earth over the last 100 years. The temperature of cosmic rays on the sun prevents the formation of clouds. Clouds cool the earth; so naturally when there are less clouds, the temperature rises! Also, it has been proven that the temperature on other plants has also increased recently. Scientists are speaking out against Gore’s theory; they unfortunately never make it to the mainstream media. Actually, Timothy Ball, a former professor of climatology at the University of Winnipeg in Canada, has been very outspoken about this issue. In response, he has received five deaths threats, via-email. Why would those in politics and the media create such a cover story concerning the causes of global warming? For exactly the same reasons the media used and abused 911. September 11th has been used over and over again as an excuse for us to give up our civil liberties in exchange for safety. They now need a new tool, and global warming suits their agenda well. Global warming is replacing 911 as a justification for the government to do anything they please. Take the emissions tests for example. Martin Durkin recently released a wonderful documentary called, ‘Swindle,’ which exposes the truth behind the global warming scam. The ironic truth, as highlighted in the ‘Swindle’ documentary, is that Western enforced tests on carbon emissions, which are ignored by India and China, are preventing poverty stricken third world nations from achieving development, by cutting off access to their huge natural resources. The measures employed to supposedly fight the negative impact of man-made global warming are, in fact, causing more pain and suffering on those already stricken by famine. In the near future, more and more measures will be taken to “prevent” any further mad-made global warming. The New York Times recently published an article, which complained, “Right now, everyone is using the atmosphere like a municipal dump, depositing carbon dioxide free." What do the New York Times suggest we do about it? “Start charging for the privilege by imposing a carbon tax.” Let’s spell that out in simplistic terms…they want to tax us for breathing! Unbelievable. Britain’s next Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, stated that we need a “new world order” to hinder climate change. It is important to note that Gordon Brown is a member of the Bilderberg Group, an elite think-tank whose suggested policies often manifest into reality. Al Gore is more of a celebrity than a politician; he is selling the public a product, expecting us to react on cue, which we are doing. If he were truly concerned, in his heart of hearts, about man-made global warming, would he be riding around in SUV’s? Please do not trust me on this issue; research these facts, and many more, yourself. Bottom line: Carbon Dioxide Emission = global warming is a gigantic scam. Cody Phillips E. 27th Street CPHILLIPS85@HOTMAIL.COM * * * Mr. Phillips should first recognize that renown scientists around the world are proving everyday that, first of all, global warming is occuring. Second of all, its effects are being exhibited in a wide range of species, weather patterns, and natural processes. Al Gore happens to be a politician who recognizes it and is able to communicate what he has learned from these scientists to the public at large from his own personal media coverage. So, I'm not convinced that "selling" is the appropriate word that should be used when referring to his attempts to explain what scientists are learning. Also, true, it is hard for scientists to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that humans alone are to blame for global warming. Since there is only one planet earth, we can't replicate this theory. However, what we can do is measure the amount of different atmospheric layer thicknesses since human arrival and from there measure the rate of warming since that time. The key word here is rate. Since humans developed engines for all sorts of things, and progressed through the Industrial Age it is obvious (from ice core CO2 levels dated to that time, and other geologic measurements) that the rate of warming has been increasing, overall. Sure, there are going to be periods of time where there are variations in these rates making it seem like it's actually getting colder some years. But, once we examine the overal trend we find that the results are shockingly of a warmer theme. For any topic, statistics can be used to argue for or against. Both sides on this argument could go at it for thousands of years. What I would beg of the public at large is to evaluate your lifestyles. Has anybody taken a chance out of their busy little lives to look up at Lookout Mountain? If they did they would see a very very hazy mountain. It shouldn't take long to realize what's causing that haze since most people happen to be sitting in and driving the culprit. This is indisputable. Cars produce particulate matter. Now, if you continue this line of thinking you will see that the haze everyday that you see, the fact that our town has one of highest rates of asthma in the nation, is due to all that driving, producing smog. Smog, i.e. carbon dioxide, is bad. It's bad for your health, bad for the "scenic" city, and bad for our planet. The truth is that carbon dioxide IS a greenhouse gas. It DOES trap radiation leading to rising temperatures. And, it WILL contribute to the detriment of our health. The debate that we should leave to scientists is whether or not we humans are the primary reason for warming ( i.e. our CO2 production). So, if for nothing else other than these last reasons PLEASE conserve your driving to a minimum, walk to work, ride a bike, car pool, and stop driving your gas guzzling tanks around town. You can thank the next person you see driving a Hummer, Extersion, Expedition for the price in fuel these days. Why do most Americans feel the need to have the biggest house, largest truck, the most things? We even eat too much! Please, look at your life as one and understand that millions more will come after you and that your actions will be reverberated. You won't ever see the damage, but maybe your grandkids will at the rate we litter, pollute and overconsume. Justin Edge Vine Street justinledge@gmail.com * * * Mr. Lane needs to do some homework. Again, faulty science is being espoused as fact using talking points and buzz words of the global warming zealots. "Smog, i.e. carbon dioxide"...for starters, carbon dioxide is an invisible gas. That means it's colorless and odorless, therefore we can't see it or smell it. The visible components of "smog" are due to hydrocarbons and compounds of nitrogen. Can we get our facts straight, please? That being stated, we also live on the edge of the Blue Ridge Mountains. They get their name from the bluish haze that can be seen over the forest, a bluish haze that's produced by the terpenes and esters released by the trees and other flora native to the area, primarily from the pines and hemlocks. The haze has been there since time immemorial. Lookout Mountain was, on occasion, partially obscured by a haze when I was a boy back in the 50s and 60s. It's the part of the country we live in. If Mr. Lane were to go up and read some of the plaques he would read that there was a haze there during the time of the Civil War...what was that deal about the Battle Above the Clouds? Plants require carbon dioxide (CO2) in order to live. Nurseries and other plant growers actually use CO2 generators in their operations, and there's been more than one person busted for hydroponically growing whacky baccy because of the combination of their gas and electricity usage. CO2 isn't necessarily a bad thing, unless we're doing illegal things with it. It's a fact weather systems flow from west to east. It's also a fact the United States is a "CO2 suck," that the air approaching from the west has a higher CO2 content than that leaving on the east. How do the greenies explain that? While on the subject of weather, how do we account for the fact that meteorologists cannot accurately forecast what the weather will be two weeks from today but we're supposed to believe that some greenie can forecast without a shadow of doubt what the weather will look like one year or more from now with no change in human activity? It's also a scientific fact that world atmospheric CO2 levels are lower now than during many times in history, especially prehistoric times when dinosaurs roamed the earth, if we read and listen to more than the global warming zealots. Some scientists, those guys who actually study this stuff, at least those whose research grants and incomes don't depend on proof of global warming, are actually concerned about the low levels of CO2 for proper plant health. "(O)ur town has one of highest rates of asthma in the nation" is also a misstatement. My son was diagnosed with severe hay fever back in 1977. His mother also had problems. My sister had such bad hay fever that when we were kids she had a good day and thought her nose had quit working. The allergist told us that people who have never had problems with asthma and allergies in their lives could move to two places in the country and experience problems with both...Charlotte, N.C., where we lived at the time, and Chattanooga, which I always called home. It seems there is a direct relationship between oak trees and hay fever as a high proportion of the human population is sensitive to them. I was diagnosed with hay fever and mild asthma as a kid but it seems to have abated since I've been smoking two and three packs of cigarettes a day...and stopped splitting firewood. Mr. Gore, High Priest of the Church of Global Warming, would not commit to reducing his power consumption, from all sources, to a level not exceeding that of the average American family within one year from that date. Why? Why was he evasive? Does he have needs that are more important than those of others or does he just suffer from "don't do as I do, do as I say do" arrogance? And let's not go off on the "carbon offset" tangent. That's nothing more than a scam intended to cover the tracks of the wasters and allows them to fool the unthinking. Waste is still waste, no matter the form. Mr. Albert Gore, Jr., former Vice President, former Senator, most certainly is a politician. He studied journalism. He studied theology. He invented the internet. And his credentials in hard science are what? What credentials does he have in chemistry, physics, climatology, earth science, geology, or any of the other hard sciences one would relate directly to global warming? He may have studied astrology, but I've yet to see that he ever studied astronomy. How does he explain warming of the Martian ice caps? As proof of global warming we're shown pictures of big hunks of glaciers falling off that were taken back in the 20s and 30s, when the decade of the 30s is measurably the warmest in the past hundred years...as evidenced by charts and graphs available from our own NOAA. Glaciers are nothing more than rivers of ice that actually do flow to the sea just like any other river. That's where icebergs have always come from. We're shown pictures of polar bears on an ice flow that was taken on 7 August 2004 and told that they're being victimized by global warming. It was summertime in the Arctic for Pete's sake. We're told that polar bears are endangered when their population is something over 20,000 today after being less than 5,000 in the 50s. Can we stop the hysteria and misinformation campaigns? To be sure we all need to be mindful of our affect on the environment, but all of the world's ills aren't the fault of the United States as some would like us to believe. In production of man-made pollutants we need to be looking at some other nations such as India, Southeast Asia, and China who, if they don't already they soon will, generate more pollution than we ever have. Mr. Lane's passion for doing the right thing is commendable, but he needs to study the facts and stop listening to the zealots and parroting what they preach. Perhaps he would do more good by focusing his efforts on the invasion of our nation by illegal aliens who bring their illness and disease with them, diseases that had been eradicated in this nation many years ago. Perhaps he would do more good by studying why, according to the Tennessee Code Annotated section 53-8-111, a health certificate is required for all persons working with food but our Tennessee Department of Health doesn't enforce the law...and why Speaker Naifeh's gang refuses to force them to do it. Perhaps he could accomplish more by helping children learn to read so they can learn math and science, thereby to study and make up their own minds about what some would have us believe with their emotional arguments. And before we complain about the price of gasoline, we need to evaluate how much we pay for that bottled water that's so popular these days. Personally, I don't drink the stuff. I've seen what fish and other critters do in it. Royce E. Burrage, Jr. RBurrage@bellsouth.net |
