County Engineer Mike Howard died Wednesday morning when he collapsed while jogging downtown.
The 56-year-old Howard was exercising when he suffered a heart attack shortly before 8 a.m., officials said.
Mr. Howard leaves a wife, Robin, and six children - ages seven to 35.
He was a YMCA football coach for 29 years and assistant scoutmaster for 21 years.
County Mayor Claude Ramsey said, "Mike Howard’s untimely death is a huge blow to all of us who knew Mike and worked with him.
"Mike joined Hamilton County Government in 1991 and made immeasurable efforts to make Hamilton County a better place for people to live as the Hamilton County engineer.
"In the last two years Mike’s department has been involved with projecting over 5,000 homes in the Ooltewah and Soddy Daisy areas.
"Mike’s department is overseeing the design and construction of five new schools and two school additions, plus many other numerous tasks his department is responsible for.
"Mike had an easy grin and a ready solution for whatever problem he had to deal with. Most importantly Mike was a trusted co-worker and my friend. My thoughts and prayers are with Robin and their children. I hope you will remember the Howards in your prayers."
Mr. Howard graduated from UT in 1972 and worked for Hensley Schmidt 1972-1984 and 1984-1988. He was with Watt and Estes from 1984-1988.
He served as an elder at Hixson Presbyterian Church.
