Mocs Hold Spring Football Game Saturday At Finley Stadium posted March 28, 2007 The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga’s 2007 Spring Football Game will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Finley Stadium. Head Football Coach Rodney Allison will put his squad through a controlled scrimmage which will cap this year's spring session. The game is free and open to the public, and the athletics department will serve pizza and Coca-Cola beverages to all in attendance after the game. Allison expects to run about 50 plays Saturday, and all four quarterbacks will get a chance to run the offense. Senior Antonio Miller is the incumbent starter. Kent State transfer Tony Pastore and redshirt freshmen Joei Fiegler and Cody Romans are pushing Miller for the job. The Mocs are looking for depth at running back and offensive line. Erroll Wynn showed flashes of brilliance at running back last year as a true freshman. He is being backed up by junior college transfer Donald Askew. The offensive line has returning starters Garrett Windham (center), Sam Bentley and Brandon Bellamy (tackles) and William Giles (guard). Bentley is coming off a broken leg from last season. Joe Hudgins and Wes Palmer are the only backups with experience. The receiving corps looks to be in good shape with Clint Woods, a converted quarterback, Jordan Hazard, Blue Cooper, junior college transfer Thomas Hinton and redshirt freshman Chris Pitchford. Defensively, All-SoCon linebacker Chris Johnson returns for his senior year. Last year's leading tackler will be assisted by true sophomores Joseph Thornton and Edward Sawyer. The defensive line could be the most experienced in years with seniors Charles Profit, Nick Bridges, Jason Vincent and Malachi McGee. Throw in junior Neil Brown and it should be one of the most formidable lines in the SoCon. The outside linebackers, among others, include Wilford Blowe, Steven Mills and Jarvis Newson. Blowe and Mills have missed time this spring because of injuries. The defensive secondary is also touted as having tremendous potential. Returning starters include cornerbacks Raeshon Ball and Ronnie Jackson and safeties Jeff Phillips and Chris Camacho. Camacho joined the team late in the season last year and made an immediate impact with interceptions and hard hits. Ball and Phillips are both injured this spring. Jonathan Wright returns as the punter. There is a need for a field goal kicker, and redshirt freshman Jordan Thompson and sophomore Craig Camay are the frontrunners heading into the fall to work as the place kicker. Camay will provide a big boost on kickoffs. He missed last season, but as a true freshman in 2005, booted nearly 20 kickoffs into the end zone. Allison has also had to replace three coaches, running backs coach Jay Graham, defensive backs coach Ahren Self and tight ends coach Blaine McCorkle. Joining the staff are Bobby Allison, secondary assistant, Scott Brumett, outside linebackers, and Aaron Harris, running backs. Former UTC player Tim Powers will coach the tight ends, and last year's outside linebackers coach David Bibee will head up the secondary. |
