WTCI Airs Special On Obesity Epidemic Wednesday posted April 6, 2007 WTCI, the community’s PBS station, will broadcast "Fat: What No One is Telling You", a documentary that explores the myriad of psychological and environmental factors that can make it so tough to shed pounds and keep them off. The program, which will air at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, shares new scientific knowledge about hunger, eating, and human metabolic operation. The film also explains psychological responses to food, and shows how external pressures (such as oversized restaurant portions and the unending barrage of food advertisement) make fighting fat so difficult, both on the personal and national levels. Open abuse of fat people is our last accepted prejudice, according to experts. Obesity experts have a growing awareness of the complex human puzzle that is driving this epidemic and creating so much personal pain in a society that worships “thin.” WTCI will supplement the national PBS documentary with “Focus on Health: Prescription for Healthy Living.” This local roundtable discussion, hosted by Heidi Robinson, will focus on the health risks and daily challenges overweight people may experience. The panel will feature local medical experts discussing these issues in addition to answering questions live on the air from viewers. The special is a part of WTCI’s monthly primetime health initiative that educates the community on a different health issue each month. “The program gives viewers a window into the intense human dramas that rage inside people who have been labeled obese and how hard their weight problem is to solve,” said Paul Grove, WTCI President and CEO. “This is one way WTCI plays a positive role in enriching the community. WTCI’s mission is to provide programming with a vital purpose.” The special is a part of WTCI’s monthly primetime health initiative that educates the community on a different health issue each month. Other topics explored include heart disease and hearing-impaired issues. Future months will include Alzheimer’s disease, Cancer, Women's Health and Depression. Major funding for WTCI’s health initiative is provided by Unum Group, Red Swan Fitness Spa and BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee. |
