Lookouts Bounce Back Beating Biscuits Saturday, 4-3 by Tim Evearitt posted April 14, 2007
Highlights of the game included a foul ball into the visitor’s dugout sending a pitcher to the hospital. There were two homers in the game: Chattanooga’s Cody Strait and the Biscuits’ Evan Longoria each hit their second home runs of the season. The Lookouts had eight hits while Montgomery had six hits in the contest. - Chattanooga’s LeCure threw 5 1/3 innings giving up two runs on six hits; he walked three and struck out seven. - Montgomery’s Mason went 5 2/3 innings. He gave up two runs on five hits, walking two and striking out five. Chattanooga fell behind in the second inning when Shaun Cumberland scored on catcher John Jaso’s single to right. The Biscuits added another run in the fourth thanks to Evan Longoria’s long homer over the left field wall. Longoria is the #2 prospect in the Tampa Bay organization. The Lookouts evened the score, 2-2, in the bottom of the fourth. Chris Dickerson led off with a single to right. Cody Strait hit a two-run homer, his second of the year, over the left field wall. A light rain began to fall again in the fifth inning. In the sixth, the Lookouts threatened. After Dickerson walked, he moved to second on Strait’s single to left. Jay Garthwaite popped out to first for the second out. Lefty Brian Henderson took over for Mason. On the first pitch to Tonys Gutierrez the Looks pulled off a double-steal without a throw. Gutierrez walked to load the bases with two outs bringing Caonabo Cosme to the plate. Manager Billy Gardner went to the pen for right handed reliever Evan Meek. Cosme went down on called strikes. Right handed reliever Derrik Lutz pitched two scoreless innings in relief of LeCure. He set the side down in order in the seventh. The game was halted for about 20 minutes when a foul ball off the bat of Fernando Perez hit pitcher Meek in the Montgomery dugout. He was wheeled off the field and taken to the hospital for further observation. When play resumed Perez flew out to right for the second out. The Biscuits were retired without any damage. Chattanooga broke the 2-2 tie in the eighth scoring two runs. Dickerson and Strait hit back-to-back doubles over the center fielder’s head. After the second out of the inning, Gutierrez drove in the second run on a double that fell in front of Fernando Perez in center. Lefty Mike Bumatay came on to pitch the ninth for the Lookouts. After going 0-2, he walked the first man he faced and hit the second batter. Gabriel Martinez hit a long fly to deep left that allowed the runner to tag from second and move to third. Pinch hitter, Josh Arhart flew out to right field allowing the runner on third to tag and score. With two away, Bumatay walked left handed hitting Breen moving a runner into scoring position. Switching hitting Perez grounded to short to end the threat. Game over. Justin Mallett (1-0) was credited with the win after throwing the eighth to set-up Bumatay’s first save of the season. * * * * * The Lookouts will close their five-game home series with Montgomery, tomorrow at 2:15. “Dogs on the Diamond” will be the featured promotion of the afternoon.
