Burning Candle Causes Fire At City View Apartments posted April 17, 2007 No injuries were reported in connection with a fire at City View Apartments on Tuesday afternoon. The Chattanooga Fire Department received the alarm at 4:41 p.m. and responded to 2709 Citico Ave. with six fire companies. Battalion Chief Ben Biggs said the firefighters did a good job of containing the fire to one apartment unit. There may be some minor smoke and water damage to adjacent units. Amber Davis told firefighters that she had a lit candle on a table close to her couch. She said she fell asleep and eventually woke up to discover that her couch was on fire. Ms. Davis said she went to the kitchen to get some water, but, when she returned, the entire couch was on fire so she got out and called 911. Ms. Davis has a 2-year-old daughter, who was at a day care center at the time of the fire. The fire destroyed most of Ms. Davis' belongings, but she does not have renter's insurance. Volunteers with the American Red Cross were called in to provide assistance to the family. Chief Biggs said the cause of the fire will be ruled accidental, as the physical evidence confirms the fire was started by a lit candle. |
