Health Department Looks Into Illnesses From Marriott Dinner posted April 17, 2007 The Chattanooga-Hamilton County Health Department is looking into a number of illnesses after a dinner a the Chattanooga Marriott Convention Center on Friday night. County Commissioner Greg Beck said he was among those who became very ill with stomach problems after the dinner honoring the Rev. W.C. Hunter and his wife on their 54th wedding anniversary. Commissioner Beck said he had chills, vomiting, diarrhea and stomach cramps throughout the week. But he said his wife ate the same food items he did and did not get sick. Commissioner Beck said he knows of some 40 people who suffered similar symptoms after the meal that included steak and green beans. Health Department officials said, "We received reports of persons that have become ill after attending an event Chattanooga Marriott Convention Center Friday, April 13, and Saturday, April 14. Reported symptoms include nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. "On Monday, environmental health staff from the Health Department inspected kitchens at the Marriott and Trade Convention Center. No critical violations were found. The Health Department is following standard operating procedures to investigate possible causes of illness. At this time, the cause of the reports of illness is unknown. "The Health Department will provide any follow-up needed." Tom Pugh, Marriott general manager, said the restaurant follows all Marriott procedures in food handling. He said a review had not identified a source for the illnesses. |
