Watkins Caught With Cache From Convenience Store
posted April 19, 2007

A police officer testified that he caught Orlando Watkins at a school portable building chomping down on food items he had just stolen from a convenience store across Highway 58.

Officer David Cowan said Watkins was hiding in a corner at Lakeside Academy eating honey buns and ice cream and smoking a cigar.

Watkins had charges of theft and vandalims bound to the Grand Jury by General Sessions Court Judge David Bales.

His bond was increased to $37,500

Judge Bales also ordered into execution a previous 11 month and 29 day sentence for theft.

Prosecutor Lila Statom said Watkins has an extensive criminal record, including thefts, reckless endangerment, indecent exposure, assault and numerous criminal trespasses.

He told the judge he broke into the Kangaroo store because "somebody spit in my cup and I got mad and threw the rock."

Patricia Copeland said a rock was thrown through the front door of the Kangaroo early Sunday morning.

She said a video shows Watkins going inside, tearing an alarm off the wall and helping himself to Little Debbies, ice cream and a 20-ounce Coke.

He also threw a rock through a window to get inside the portable at the school, it was stated.

Officer Cowan said he was investigating the Kangaroo break-in when he got word about the problem at the school. He said he went nearby and found Watkins.
