Girls Preparatory School’s 2007 May Day ceremonies were held Wednesday with Brandi Andrews presiding as queen.
With a theme of “Old Hollywood,” the traditional event celebrated the senior class with music and dancing.
The annual event began with a festival starring sixth grade performers and orchestra groups.
Classmates and early-arriving guests mingled on the patio amid sales of food items and commemorative t-shirts designed by sophomore Michele Donihe.
Members of the senior class were officially presented at 2 p.m. In beautiful and colorful long dresses and carrying bouquets of spring flowers, they preceded the arrival of the May Queen and her court.
After a promenade on the Smith Courtyard lawn, the pageant continued with dances featuring seventh, eighth, and ninth grade dance clubs, as well as sophomore and junior members of Apprentice Dance and Terpsichord.
In keeping with the “Old Hollywood” theme, the dances were choreographed to the music of South Pacific, Guys and Dolls, Annie Get Your Gun, and Singing in the Rain. The traditional winding of the blue, yellow, and pink May Poles by members of the sophomore class and the singing of the Alma Mater concluded the event.
The maid of honor was Sasha Saidi, and members of the Court were Marshall Bright, Marybeth Campeau, Lizzy Gregory and Susan Spicknall.
The selection of the court by the senior class is based on the following description: We believe that our May Queen and Court should be representatives of the Senior Class in the highest sense. They should be gracious, friendly and loyal to friends and to GPS. They should be actively and enthusiastically involved in the life of GPS, eager to give of their time and their talents. They should stand for the highest ideals in character and integrity. They should be respected and admired by fellow schoolmates and faculty alike.
Members of the May Day Committee, seniors chosen to help coordinate the event, were Tyler Haskins, Ashley Babb, Kristin Holloway, Jessica Rogers, Lindsey Gruwell, Gavin McLaughlin, Kathleen Bires, Amber Royal, Allison Rhodes, Porche Warren, Liz Ryan, and Judith Crews.
Co-directors of this year’s pageant were Tracie Durham and Cathie Kasch, assisted by Susie Crouch and Erin Oliver.
