posted May 8, 2007

A generator caused a fire in a house under renovation on Tuesday afternoon.

At 12:08 p.m. the Chattanooga Fire Department was dispatched to a fire at 2515 Chamberlain Ave. where a generator was on fire on the back porch.

Firefighters quickly stretched a hand held hose line to the house and extinguished the fire. The fire was contained to the porch and rear walls of the house.

According to the occupant of the house, he has been using a generator to supply power to the house while he was doing renovations. The occupant states that he heard a backfire noise and shortly thereafter, a neighbor told him the house was on fire.

According to neighbors, damage to the house was minimized due to the quick response and actions of the firefighters. Damages are estimated at $20,000.

Engine 5, Ladder 1, Ladder 5, Quint 1, Quint 2 and Squad 1 responded to the fire call. The Chattanooga Fire Department Fire Marshal's office, building inspections and neighborhood services are following up on the incident.
