CSAS’s Penn Commits To Maryville College

MARYVILLE, Tenn.- CSAS's Chris Penn has committed to continue his education, and soccer career at Maryville College in Maryville, Tenn.

The son of Deborah Moazen from Chattanooga, TN, Chris was a standout in the goal for the Patriots under Coaches Ron Nance, and Patrick Daverson.

A four-year letterman in varsity soccer, Penn was a two-time Best of the Preps selection, and a two-time Defensive MVP. Penn’s senior season is still underway and he is leading the team as captain. They are currently undefeated as they enter the post-season ranked No. 1 in the State. Individually Penn is the No. 1 ranked goalkeeper in the Chattanooga area as he as only allowed 7 goals in 14 games. Penn also played club soccer for East Ridge Express 88 under coach Gary Kuehn.

As an NCAA Division III institution, Maryville College does not award scholarships based on athletic performance; however, for his proven academic ability and accomplishments, the Chattanooga School for the Arts and Science graduate has been awarded the Maryville College Scots Scholarship.

Pepe Fernandez, head coach of the Maryville College men’s soccer team, said, “Chris will add some depth to us at the goalkeeper position, and with his size and athletic ability should challenge for playing time as a freshman.”

This fall, Penn will join a team that finished the 2006 season with a 13-6-0 record. Winning the Great South Athletic Conference regular season championship. The Fighting Scot’s return 19 players from last year’s squad, and they are lead by All-South selections Evan Giordano (Knoxville, TN), Joe McGroom (Oak Ridge, TN), and Jason Bowman (Knoxville, TN).

Fernandez has led the men and women’s soccer programs at Maryville College since 1989. The coach’s win-loss record for the Fighting Scot’s is 221-100-19. (Ranked 34th all-time in winning percentage)
