Grimsley Couple Killed In Hixson Pike Wreck
1 Other Hurt In 3-Vehicle Crash
posted May 20, 2007

A second person has died from a three-vehicle crash on Hixson Pike on Saturday afternoon.

James A. "Bill" Grimsley, 79, of Soddy-Daisy died at the scene. His wife, Arbutus Johnson Grimsley, also 79, died Sunday afternoon from her injuries.

County Commissioner Fred Skillern said the Grimsleys were longtime friends of his family. "They were the nicest people in the world," he said.

Commissioner Skillern said he carpooled to work from Soddy-Daisy with Bill Grimsley for many years until he made foreman.

Mr. Grimsley was a Navy veteran, and the couple will be buried at the National Cemetery on Tuesday.

Witnesses said it appeared an elderly man driving a black Jaguar north on Hixson Pike near Bright School veered across the double yellow line and hit the Grimsley vehicle. His name has not yet been released by police.

Around 3:15 p.m. Saturday, police responded to the three-car accident in the 2000 block of Hixson Pike.

According to witnesses, the Jaguar struck a late-model Mercury Grand Marquis. A BMW traveling behind the Mercury also struck the Mercury.

Mr. Grimsley, the driver of the Mercury, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Jaguar and a passenger in the Mercury - Mrs. Grimsley - were transported to Erlanger Medical Center.

The occupants of the BMW were uninjured.
