Police Blotter: Purse Stolen While Putting Flowers On Grave

Two women told police one of their purses was stolen from their vehicle while they were putting flowers on a grave at a cemetery on Highway 153.

A woman said her mother left her purse in the vehicle.

She said they were approached by a man driving a red Mustang. The model was around 1997. The man asked if they knew where a Letterman was buried. They said they had no idea.

The man then walked to their car, got the purse, then ran to the Mustang and took off.

The purse contained $80 in cash, credit cards, two books of checks, a driver's license and Social Security card.

The man was around 6'2" and 185 pounds.

About the same time, a man parked at Greenway Farm while he went bicycling for an hour.

When he returned to his car, he found his right front door passenger window had been knocked out.

The thief got his wallet and satellite receiver. A 45-caliber pistol that was in plain view was not taken.

Herman Rodriguez came home to his residence on Igou Gap Road to find that someone had broken in through a rear sliding glass door.

A box containing $3,000 in cash was taken from his bedroom closet. A pair of headphones was also taken.

Hunter Rodgers said he parked at Barking Legs Theatre on Dodds Avenue. When he returned to his car, he found the driver's side rear window was broken.

Nothing was missing, however.

Duane Hughes of Meadow Lark Lane said he was asleep at 4:20 a.m. when he heard the sound of breaking glass.

He found that someone had thrown a 40-ounce Bud Ice beer bottle through his bedroom window.

Another beer bottle had smashed against the side of the residence.

At Thankful Baptist Church on Orchard Knob Avenue, a thief tore up a heat and air unit to get the copper wire.

The damage was around $3,000.

William Owens said he was stopped at a traffic light on Hixson Pike when a minivan pulled up beside him.

A man jumped out of the minivan and struck his windshield with a bat.

Robert House said he was walking on McCallie Avenue when a black male called him over to a parking lot at Glenwood.

He said when he got up to the man, he struck him in the jaw with a closed fist, then he kicked him in the groin. The assailant demanded, "Give me your money."

Mr. House handed over his wallet containing $80. He was transported to Parkridge Hospital. The man ran off toward Kilmer Street.

John Fugate said he and his wife, Jacinta, went to Holiday Bowl on Hixson Pike.

When they came out, they found a window had been knocked out and Mrs. Fugate's purse was gone.

On Highland Avenue, Ashley Ward said a man she knows as "Blessed" drove up in a red Ford F-150 pickup truck and nearly hit her and her infant son. She said Blessed was drunk.

Ms. Ward said he got out and put a knife to her throat, then two men intervened.

Blessed left, but returned a few minutes later with a gun. He pointed it at her and one of the men before he finally left.

Donamiche Evans of N. Chamberlain Avenue came home to find that a burglar had gotten in through a window.

Two piggy banks containing $60 in change were taken. A TV and VCR were positioned near the front door. Some CDs were scattered in the front yard. A number of items were scattered all through the house.

Zoran Djordjevic said someone got into the crawl space of his duplex on Montview Drive in Brainerd.

They cut the copper out of a heating and air conditioning unit, destroying it. They also started to cut the copper pipes in the house.

A backpack filled with copper pipes was left behind.

Deputy Yoland Ward, who lives on N. Concord, said her patrol car was damaged overnight.

Someone knocked out the rear driver's side door window.

Ted Wells of W. 48th Street found that someone broke through his back door. The house was ransacked and a number of items taken.

A witness said he saw a black male age around 20 at the back door.

Kathleen Benson said she stopped at the Golden Gallon on Lee Highway to get cigarettes and beer.

She said when she started to leave, a black male got in on the passenger side. She said he told her he needed a ride to the Red Roof Inn.

When they arrived there, he said he needed money for a cab. She gave him $8.

The man helped himself to several of her beers as he exited.

Johnny Silman said he was driving with his family on N. Germantown Road when two people hiding in bushes threw something at his vehicle.

The object damaged a window and window frame. The pair in the bushes laughed and ran off.

At Enterprise Rental Car on W. 20th Street, manager Brian Davis said he had discovered an embezzlement. He said employee Fredrick Rogers over two months had run up $4,500 in gas charges.

He said some of the gas went into his personal vehicle and he also sold gas at a discount to others.

Rogers was taken to the County Jail and charged with theft over $1,000.
