City Approves Across-The-Board 3% Pay Increase
Vote Is 6-3, Others Support $500 Payment
posted July 10, 2007

The City Council voted 6-3 on Tuesday night for a 3 percent across-the-board pay increase for city employees.

The raise is retroactive to July 1.

Councilman Jack Benson was one of those opposed, saying it helps to keep widening the gap between those at the bottom of the pay scale and those at the top.

He also said the "bonus" payments of $500 would leave the city salary money that can be allocated later in the year according to the results of a new pay study by a consulting firm.

Voting with him were council members Leamon Pierce and Duke Franklin.

Councilman Pierce said, "I see this gap growing. We're taking from the poor and fattening the rich."

Voting in favor were council members Dan Page, Marti Rutherford, Manny Rico, Linda Bennett and Sally Robinson.

Last Tuesday, the council had balked at approving the across-the-board increase.

Daisy Madison, finance director, said salaries need to be strengthened at all levels so the city can attract top managers and employees.

She said city employees at all levels receive a generous benefits package.

Councilman Benson said, "I can't take the compensation package to the grocery store."

Ms. Madison replied, "But you can take it to the doctor's office."
