Child Playing With Lighter Leaves Family Homeless posted July 19, 2007 Adults in a house located at 1104 N. Orchard Knob Avenue discovered that a bed was on fire in a back bedroom Wednesday evening. Initial efforts to put the fire out failed, so the three adults and two children got out of the house and called 911. Chattanooga firefighters with Engine 5, Engine 5, Ladder 5 and Quint 10 responded to the call at 9:48 p.m. and had the fire out in roughly 15 minutes. Cpt. Marvin Hudgins with Engine 4 said they were able to contain the fire damage to the bedroom, but there was smoke and fire damage to the rest of the house. There were no injuries directly related to the fire, but a 69-year-old grandmother was transported to a local hospital by Hamilton County EMS for observation. Lt. Anthony Moore with the Fire Investigation Division made a determination on the cause on Thursday afternoon. Lt. Moore said a five-year-old boy was playing with a cigarette lighter, and set a comforter on fire. The fire spread to the mattress and a couch and was beginning to make its way into the attic before firefighters arrived to put it out. The cause will be listed as accidental and no charges will be filed. Lt. Moore said the family did not have renter's insurance. Volunteers with the American Red Cross were called in to provide the family with an alternate place to stay and other assistance. Lt. Henry McElvain and Senior Firefighter Andy Waters also assisted with the investigation. |
