TVA Retiree, WWII Veteran, Active In Lions Club

Vernon E. "Dan" Deal, 85, of Signal Mountain, died on Monday, July 23, 2007 at Alexian Health Care Facility.

Born on November 5, 1920 in Statesville, N.C., his family later moved to Memphis, Tn., where Dan grew up. He graduated from Memphis Tech High School, attended Memphis State University and graduated from Business College in Memphis.

He served in World War II for four years, and enrolled in Officer Candidate School and graduated a Lieutenant in the Air Force. He served two years as a Major in the Korean War.

Dan retired from TVA after 42 years, mainly in Power Systems Operations in Sheffield, Al. In 1977, he was transferred to Chattanooga to work with the Mams program.

Mr. Deal was a member of Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church, where he was a member of the Becking Class. He was an ordained elder of the Presbyterian Church of Sheffield, Al.

Dan was a very active member of the Signal Mountain Lions Club; he was honored with the Distinguished Award "The Melvin Jones Award" for dedicated humanitarian services by the Lions Club International, the Lions Club highest award. He served in the Lions Club from 1957 to 2002. He was a member of Chattanooga Military Retired Officers Association.

Dan was preceded in death by his parents, Vernon and Lucille Morrison Deal.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Geraldine Raines Deal; sister, Mary Moore of Memphis, and several nieces and a nephew.

A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at Chattanooga National Cemetery with the Vietnam veterans serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Becking Class and Signal Mountain Lions Club.

A service of celebration will follow at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday at Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church in Marr Chapel with Dr. Bill Dudley officiating.

The family will receive friends after the service of celebration at the church on Wednesday.

Memorial contributions may be made to the two Alexian Village Scholarship Funds or your favorite charity.

Arrangements are by the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory and Florist.
