City Buying East Brainerd Golf Course For $1.2 Million
For First Tee Site, Flood Control
posted July 28, 2007

The city is buying a nine-hole golf course in East Brainerd for a First Tee Golf program and for flood control.

The property of the Hickory Valley Golf Course at 2453 Hickory Valley Road includes over 39 acres.

City Councilman Jack Benson said a creek runs across the property, but years ago it was straightened and given a concrete liner. He said the creek will be rebuilt as a natural, meandering stream.

Councilman Benson said that should help with flooding problems at nearby townhomes as well as along Standifer Gap Road, where the farm of former County Commissioner Harold Coker was recently flooded.

First Tee, which seeks to introduce young people to the game of golf, has long sought a permanent home here.

Councilman Benson said the golf course will also be available for use in the golf programs of local schools and available for public play with a greens fee.

He said it will be operated by First Tee.

Councilman Benson said funding was provided for the purchase by First Tee, the state Department of Environment and Conservation and grants as well as the city.

The golf course will continue under the present management until January.

The city used The Trust for Public Land to help acquire the property.

The group will be paid up to $100,000 to cover closing costs and other expenses of the acquisition.
