Former Hamilton County Republican Party Chairman Robin Smith took the reins on Saturday as chairman of the state GOP.

Mrs. Smith, who is from Hixson, replaces Bob Davis, who is joining the Fred Thompson for President campaign.

Mrs. Smith, 44, will receive a $110,000 salary in her new role.

She and her husband, Scott, have two children.

Mrs. Smith has been serving as state vice chairman.

She said, "I have been honored to have been elected to serve as chairman with my promise of servant leadership. The upcoming election cycle holds much anticipation and will demand much from each of us regarding our time, our energy and financial investments. I am blessed to have the opportunity to work with a tremendous team of folks committed to victory.

"The legacy of excellence and a majority will be our goals. This will begin immediately in working shoulder to shoulder with Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey, Senate Leader Mark Norris and House Leader Jason Mumpower and their team of leadership in making gains in our state legislative chambers. There will be a surge in Tennessee that will change our state for generations to come.

"Our U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander will lead Tennessee’s ticket in 2008 with a record of distinction, service and a “Tennessee first” philosophy in his re-election campaign. Our Sens. Alexander and Bob Corker approach legislation in the commonsense manner characteristic of our great state and reflecting our priorities. Without question, we are represented by two great leaders.

"The Congressional delegation in the U.S. House is unmatched in the grassroots representation of Congressmen, Duncan, Blackburn, Wamp and Davis. Townhall meetings, personal appearances and a very hands-on approach are hallmarks of these tremendous leaders of our state. Their service is valued and critical to us all.

"I extend a personal invitation to you during this pivotal election in joining the TRP in our efforts to extend the gains of our party in the Tennessee legislature and working to keep our Members of Congress solidly in the role as statesmen of our party and nation. Every area of service and participation is significant, appreciated and welcomed. The time is rich with opportunity for us all as majority builders to elect leaders with vision who stand on the principles that make America great.

"My commitment is to be tireless and focused in pursuing this opportunity. I know that you, along with our TRP team, will make the victories of 2008 a reality."
