Democratic Chairman Bailes Won't Endorse Candidate
posted August 7, 2007

Hamilton County Democratic Party Chairman John Bailes said Tuesday that the local Democratic organization's leadership team "will not endorse or support any candidate in the special primary election for state senator in District 10."

Mr. Bailes said, "We encourage all Democratic candidates in this primary election to focus on the voters living in District 10. This primary will be decided by the voters of District 10."

Chattanooga attorney Andy Berke and South Pittsburg Mayor Mike Killian have said they plan to be Democratic candidates.

Mayor Killian said Monday he has decided to make the race.

Attorney Berke was announcing his candidacy this morning at Normal Park School in North Chattanooga. He was then headed to the Jasper BBQ at noon and was to participate in Glenwood's Neighborhood Night Out tonight.

Oscar Brock of Lookout Mountain may be a Republican contender.

On Monday, Gov. Phil Bredesen issued an order for a special election for the seat that had long been held by Ward Crutchfield, who recently pleaded guilty to federal bribery charges.

The Democratic and Republican primary elections will be held on Oct. 4, and the general election will be held on Nov. 15.

Mr. Bailes said, "After a Democratic nominee has been elected for the 10th Senate seat, whoever that may be, the Hamilton County Democratic Party leadership will work tirelessly to elect a Democrat to the state senate and retain this seat."
